10 Worst Superhero Movies Of The 2010s
7. Venom (2018)
So you’re Sony. Your biggest cash-cow Spider-Man is making good money with Marvel but you can’t use him in your Venom movie. What do you do? Just leave him out completely.
That really is one of the biggest problems with Venom, because having Spider-Man’s greatest villain in a film without the infamous web-slinger would always struggle to find its footing, and despite Tom Hardy’s best efforts, that’s exactly what happened with massive leaps in logic no-one could suspend their disbelief for, writing and directing straight out of a 90s rom-com, and boring corporate bad guy with survival of the fittest motivation. Not to mention that ugly and illogical final fight between two interchangeable goo monsters that makes Transformers look like The Raid.
This is also a film that really would have benefitted from being R-rated, what with the history of Eddie Brock and Venom being so tumultuous and violent. It would have been a difficult watch but something that would have pleased the fan-base and would have at least been interesting to watch. Instead though, the film went with the method of shoe-horning the occasional comic reference in as well as being tame enough to get a PG-13 rating, attempting to please all audiences.
It must have work to some extent looking at the box office gross and the sequel that’s in production. Looking back years from now though, I doubt people will remember this with much fondness.
