10 Worst Superhero Movies Of The 21st Century

5. Power Rangers (2017)

Ghost Rider Spirit Of Vengeance
Lionsgate

Admittedly, product placement is a regular and abundant factor of modern film. It is essential for increasing the films production budget and when done tastefully, it can have no negative effect on the realism or reputation of the film. However, the live action remake of Power Rangers may as well have been a 2-hour Krispy Kreme advert.

The donut chain restaurant was shoe-horned into the film at every opportunity to the extent where it became a mockery and overshadowed every other aspect of the film. Entire scenes were filmed inside Krispy Kreme restaurants including a light hearted training exchange, where two of the Power Rangers challenge each other over a donut. Adding to this is an especially included shot of our antagonist, Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks), eating a Krispy Kreme donut in a brief moment of calm amidst a crucial action scene.

Beyond this borderline insulting barrage of marketing, there are few positives possessed by this film. Acting performances were tarnished by the weak, lucid script meaning cast either had to overcompensate for the lack of depth or come off as cheesy and bland. Not even Bryan Cranston was able to deliver a convincing performance thanks to the shallow scriptwriting.

For a high budget film, the special effects are also cringe-inducing for the most part and it seems more like a mid-budget television series than a major movie production. Overall, this film was a box office crash that disappointed fans and critics alike, before being swiftly forgotten about and swept under the rug.
