Its a tough task having to share all of your scenes with Robert Downey Jr. So when an Oscar-winner like Gwyneth Paltrow is having a rough go of making her character feel essential, there might be something amiss. Its not that Pepper is poorly written, so much as she just has nothing to do. Sure, by the time the third film rolls around, she gets into the action, but up until then, she manages Tony Starks life and not much else. She exists to simplify things for him and apparently for nothing else. Considering all of these facts about the character, they could have just given the role to anybody and gotten a similar response. But in giving it to Paltrow, the audience is aware that the character could be so much more. Pepper is still around in the MCU so hopefully the next time we see her, Paltrow will actually get a chance to show off her acting chops.
