6. The Lone Ranger

From one colossal misfire to another, The Lone Ranger still stands to this day as one of Disney's biggest failures. It arrived in 2013 from director Gore Verbinski, who once again teamed up with actor Johnny Depp. The studio figured the duo could create another winner in the early 2010s.

Initially, The Lone Ranger was a classical TV series that ran from the late forties to late fifties. It followed a Texas ranger, who was the soul survivor of a gang massacre. To continue his duties and bring the outlaws to justice, the ranger dons a mask and teams up with Native American Tonto as they venture out into the frontier.

Some sixty years later, Disney took a stab at the story, casting Johnny Depp and Arnie Hammer in the title roles. While the story had the potential to show a sense of brotherhood between the characters, The Lone Ranger instead boils down to an overly-long runtime and endlessly mindless action.

What The Lone Ranger ended up being was a title rather similar to Pirates of the Caribbean. It featured the same swashbuckling action and banter between the characters, just translated into a different setting. It ended up being a major box office bomb, barely scraping back its 250 million dollar budget.
