10 Worst Western Movies Of Past 20 Years
3. Diablo
Of the many westerns that have filled the cinematic screen, many have often incorporated the American Civil War into their stories. Westward expansion did come about after 1864 after all. However, one should be careful that this plot thread doesn't overwhelm the story and characters. 2015's Diablo falls prey to this.
In an odd twist, Diablo goes for a more psychological story; in the aftermath of the Civil War, a Union veteran named Jackson heads westward to rescue his captured wife. All the while, the horrors of war play on his mind, leading him to question his own reality. This had some potential, but the plot is hardly firing on all cylinders.
It stars Scott Eastwood in the leading role, son of the legendary western actor Clint Eastwood. Unfortunately, Scott has a very difficult time living up to the Spaghetti Western legacy. Other actors like Walton Goggins and Danny Glover do a passable job, but on the whole the main character isn't really worth caring about.
Diablo feels incredibly lazy all around. Poor character motivations and an over-eagerness to get its twists onto the screen too soon ruins much of the tension. While it's mercifully shorter than other entries, it's still an incredibly lacklustre effort.
