10 'WTF Did I Just Pay To See' Movies
5. Sitcom (1998)
While Americans are more than able to laugh at themselves, it sometimes takes an outsider to nail down their cultural quirks, and dig into the latent humour. Such is the case for François Ozon's Sitcom. Sitting on the edge of the New French Extremity, Sitcom takes a look at domestic life in a surreal satire of the mighty US sitcom, teasing and playing with elements of shows like Father Knows Best, while dishing up some pretty unpalatable situations in the process.
A French family of four begin their descent into moral degradation when the father (François Marthouret, known only as Le père) brings home a small, white rat, whose presence seems to unleash taboo desires and untether the family from society's norms. Nicolas (Adrien de Van), the son, throws orgies in his bedroom; Sophie (Marina de Van), the daughter, casually attempts suicide; the mother (Évelyne Dandry, known only as La mère) seduces and sleeps with her son; the maid (Lucia Sanchez) openly parties and takes drugs, abandoning her housework; and the father vividly fantasises about murdering them all, before turning into a giant rat.
We see the rupturing of the domestic social contract in real time, eroding and obscuring the roles and relationships of the family members, and other visitors to their sizeable home. But whether this winds up saying more about America or France is another question.
