10 WTF Moments That Made You Give Up On A Movie
7. Batman Vs Superman - The Martha Sequence
A controversial film to say the least, but one with a fierce fan base, Batman v Superman broke from Marvel's formula with a darker gritty tone and is visually stunning. In fact, Batman saving Martha Wayne may be the single greatest action scene in comic movie history.
It was a bold decision to run a story which dared question whether Superman’s role in society was heroic or dangerous, and Bruce's refusal to allow such power to go unchecked is the most comically accurate Batman we have seen in film thus far.
While the theatrical release was rather poorly edited which lead to a lukewarm response from audiences, the ultimate cut of the film is a substantial improvement, with a more coherent plot and Lois Lane stepping out of the damsel in distress role. But one moment stands out like a sore thumb in both cuts, when Superman uses his own mother's name to plead with Batman.
The idea itself is actually brilliant, since it humanises the otherwise alien Superman in Batman’s eyes, showing that he has a mother and that he loves her. But this moment is ruined in its execution, because, frankly, nobody would describe their mother to a complete stranger by first name.
It is shocking that no one in the writing room suggested he say “find my mother, save Martha Kent” instead, which would have been a similar idea but a far less destructive one to the audience’s immersion.
