3. The Atrocious Colour Grading - Women Talking
Sarah Polley's stately drama Women Talking was widely praised for its writing, direction, and performances, enough to receive Oscar nods for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay (winning the latter).
A nomination it missed out on, though? Best Cinematography.
The most common complaint about the movie is its garish, unattractive colour grade, Polley and cinematographer Luc Montpellier deciding to desaturate the image to the point that it's almost monochrome.
While we can assume that Polley wanted to have the colourless visuals reflect the joyless lives of its protagonists, it's simply incredibly unappealing to spend 104 minutes looking at something so aesthetically drab.
It's certainly nothing against Montpellier's ability to frame up an image, but the post-production choice to strip the image of almost all its colour makes it a tough movie to ever want to rewatch, no matter how great the overall filmmaking might be.
In an era where fan edits are more prominent than ever before, it's probably just a matter of time before somebody releases their own saturated cut of the movie.
