2. The Surprise Cliffhanger - Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse is a fantastic movie - debatably the best blockbuster of the year, in fact - yet it's also a film which left millions of unsuspecting viewers groaning when those dreaded words flashed up on-screen at the end.

"To be continued."

Though it was announced in late 2021 that Across the Spider-Verse would be a two-part movie, this was largely forgotten in the 18-month lead-up to its release, especially as Sony quite shrewdly ditched the "Part One" from its title, instead renaming the third film to Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

And so, when Across the Spider-Verse reached its climax with Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) ending up in Earth-42 - an alt-universe where his father is dead and another Miles is the Prowler - while The Spot (Jason Schwartzman) prepares to attack the multiverse and the other heroes gear up to save Miles, it's completely blindsiding when it suddenly ends on a cliffhanger.

Audiences en masse were so wrapped up in the story, long though the movie already was by this point, that they were left genuinely crestfallen when it abruptly cut off.

Such is the price of two-part movies, and though fans initially took solace that they'd only have to wait until next March for the third movie, ongoing strikes make it highly likely the film will be delayed to 2025 or potentially even 2026, if rumours are to be believed.

And finally, we end with a MAJOR SPOILER for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One if you haven't seen it yet.
