4. The Mandarin Reveal - Iron Man 3

Iron Man 3 took the daring approach of marketing the film as featuring Ben Kingsley's Mandarin, and then took a total left-turn that annoyed a lot of comic fans and, well, people who like to see what is advertised. Mid-way through the film, we discover that Kingsley's character is in fact an imposter, an actor paid to give the Mandarin a name and a face while the real mastermind, Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce), gets to move ahead unimpeded. Though some might admire how bold a move it was, it left a sour taste for many because it reduced one of Iron Man's most fearsome enemies to a punch line. After so much build-up, it seemed like a massive let-down that they went this route, even if both Kingsley and Pearce give strong performances with what they have. In spite of this, the film has grossed over $1.2 billion at the worldwide box office, and has enjoyed a strong critical reception also.
