When promo imagery from X-Men: Apocalypse showed Oscar Isaacs's titular villain looking like a glorified Power Rangers cosplayer, Fox faced an uphill battle trying to convince people to go and see the movie.

Many of those that did were equally unimpressed with his appearance in the final cut, and it's easy to see why. Apocalypse is one of the most formidable and imposing villains in the Marvel Universe, and the movie failed miserable to convey that.

Fan frustration hit new heights when a rejected concept design of a more comics-accurate Apocalypse hit the net. Jerad S. Marantz's illustration presented the mutant god in sleeker armour with the same distinctive facial features he sports in the source material, proving they could have been pulled off on screen.

Not only is this a suitably menacing version of the villain, the fans would no doubt have appreciated the painstaking lengths the designers went to in recreating the character's look from the Marvel Universe.
