11 Actors Who Should Take Over Indiana Jones

10. Sally Hawkins

Idris Elba Indiana Jones
Fox Searchlight

Straight up, Sally Hawkins does the Lord's work.

Her performances have always been stand-outs, but her Oscar-nominated work as a mute woman falling in love with a fellow outsider in The Shape of Water was a cut above the rest. Without ever speaking a word, her performance was endearing, empathetic, and awe-inspiring.

She also knows how to expertly handle comedy, a key (if often underestimated) component of the Indiana Jones franchise. Her work in Paddington and its sequel allowed her to show off her impeccable comedic timing and deft ability to deliver gut-busting one-liners.

Strangely enough, the Paddington films also showcase a fair bit of stuntwork from Hawkins. The second film especially, as her primary character arc centers around her character getting to perform a lengthy underwater rescue towards the end of the film.

But most importantly, Hawkins feels out-of-place in this generation. Part of the reason her Shape of Water performance works so well is that Hawkins already feels like a silent film star who accidentally wandered into the modern day. As an actress, her craft is thoroughly rooted in the cinema of old, just as the bones and inspiration for the Jones franchise are.
