11 Actors Who Should Take Over Indiana Jones

4. Alicia Vikander

Idris Elba Indiana Jones
Warner Bros.

Vikander's star-making turn in Ex Machina proved that she could act the hell out of any role. That film centered solely around conversations and interactions, in one of the most minimalist styles one can imagine. And yet, Vikander's performance made the film feel huge. Plus, she expertly played the audience just as she played Domhnall Gleeson's character within the film.

Since then, Vikander has gone on to star in action franchises such as the recent Tomb Raider reboot and done an incredible amount of practical stuntwork. Rather than allowing the effects department to dub things in or allowing her stunt double to perform the work, Vikander prefers to do things authentically and herself. Which would be an incredibly valuable asset to the Indiana Jones franchise.

Some of the most thrilling action sequences ever committed to film have been in the Indy films. But the reason a sequence like the truck chase in Raiders works so well is that it feels so real. There is an actual man being thrown out of and then climbing underneath of a moving truck and the audience feels the tension and danger because they can't see the seams.

Compare that to a sequence like the CGI-laden forest chase in Crystal Skull, and it is easy to see just how quickly an over-reliance on digital effects can deflate an action sequence. Understandably, Ford can't perform stunts quite like he used to. But bringing in Vikander could ensure that the future of the Indiana Jones franchise remains practical, all while securing a phenomenal actress to embody the role.
