11 Actors Who've Performed Real-Life Rescues

9. John Malkovich Stops Man Bleeding To Death

It seems that Ohio pensioner Jim Walpole has one of Hollywood's best baddies - and a cigarette - to thank for his life. The 77-year-old American was on a weekend trip to Toronto in 2013 when he and his wife left the King Edward Hotel to take a walk around the city. But Jim tripped just outside the doors, fell into scaffolding on the wall and the metal tore open his neck. Meanwhile Malkovich, in town to star in Giacomo Variations at the Elgrin Theatre, was having an incredibly well-timed smoke at the side of the street. He heard Jim's wife Marilyn screaming for help and rushed straight over to use his hands to stop blood pumping out of the wound. He kept applying pressure until an ambulance arrived, as well as soothing the injured man's worries about hospital by telling him Canada had an excellent medical system and that his care would be first class. Jim says he owes the ultimate gratitude to Malkovich and two other men who arrived on the scene shortly afterwards. But the Academy Award nominee believes he was just acting as a normal human being should and later said: "Any citizen would do the same, it's nothing special."
