According to news reports he was jogging near to his Malibu home when he responded to screams for help coming from a frightened swimmer who was caught in a riptide. Hanks shouted instructions for the man to escape the lethal current, telling him to calm down and float until he could feel the pull getting weaker then swim diagonally towards the shore. The blockbusting actor then swam in to drag him safely back to the beach. And no, he didnt have any help from a blonde with a tail.
