11 Awful Opening Scenes In Otherwise Awesome Movies

9. Lame "Thrills" (And Lamer Acting) - The Evil Dead

New Line Cinema

The Movie: Sam Raimi's classic splatter-fest is a testament to the virtue of ideas over money, a low-budget but inventive and hilarious horror film that has rightly endured for over three decades, and put the director's name firmly on the map.

The Scene: The film opens with Ash (Bruce Campbell) and his friends driving into the Tennessee hills towards the film's iconic log cabin setting. The gang nearly get run off the road by a truck, and then cross a rickety bridge which very nearly collapses. They then pull up to the cabin, and the mayhem begins.

Why It Sucks: Plenty of horror films have mundane opening scenes, and despite its general brilliance, The Evil Dead is sadly no different. Though the acting isn't great through most of the film, the dialogue also happens to be thoroughly tedious in this establishing scene, and the various attempts to create tension right out of the gate seem pointless and misplaced. After all, are any extra dangers really needed when the terror ratchets up so brilliantly shortly after they arrive at the cabin?
