Riddle me this: who's the best Riddler to date? With Jim Carrey's version not having aged all that well (imagine if Carrey today put a dark spin on it), that title probably goes to Frank Gorshin, who was the original TV Riddler (John Astin stepped in when Gorshin was unavailable). Known for his high-pitched laugh and intense performances in the role, Gorshin would portray The Riddler in ten episodes of the series, the Batman movie (the West version), and 1979's television movie Legends of Superheroes. Also an acclaimed impressionist, Gorshin had roles through the years in That Darn Cat!, Where The Boys Are, 12 Monkeys, and many others. He also returned to the Batman world to voice Hugo Strange in 2005's Batman: The Animated Series, as well as for the movie Return to the Batcave: The Misadventures of Adam and Burt, appearing as himself. Gorshin, a heavy smoker, passed away due to lung cancer in 2005 at age 72.
