There weren't an awful lot of things that Marlon Brando did in the latter days of his career that are noteworthy, or that even really went well. Gone were the halcyon days of Streetcar and The Godfather, and with their departure came an ever-more demanding Brando. The actor developed a notoriety for being difficult to work with, and he brought every ounce of this reputation to the set of Richard Stanley's The Island Of Dr Moreau, as the titular scientist.

The equally difficult Val Kilmer, who was just off the back of Heat (1995) and still riding the highs of his career, played opposite Brando as Dr Montgomery. He was argumentative from the outset, wanted the film to go where he though it ought to, and clashed with Brando more and more as the picture got moving.

Unfortunately, the troubled production had the double effect of bombing at the box office and torpedoing Stanley's career, as he had a tough time wrangling the over-inflated personalities and was fired four days into filming. His replacement John Frankenheimer, however, didn't fare any better. He frequently clashed with Kilmer and, on the rare occasions he could actually get Brando to set, the septuagenarian refused to learn his new lines and insisted on being fed them via an earpiece -- a trick the similarly precious Robert Downey Jr repeated throughout his time in the MCU.

What The Island of Dr Moreau could have been, we'll never know.
