11 Big Name Actors Who Ruined Good Horror Movies
3. Vince Vaughn - Psycho (1998)
Gus Van Sant's shot-for-shot remake of Alfred Hitchock's 1960 psychological horror classic Psycho is far from the worst adaptation, reboot or remake around, but the casting of its lead raised as many eyebrows then as it does today.
If we can move past the fact that it treads on the most sacred of ground, Van Sant's film is actually quite enjoyable, bearing all of the plot points and staging of the original film, and winds up being something a little more than the sum of its parts, a curious experiment in postmodern cinema. Unfortunately, at the same time the director failed to understand at least some of what made Hitchcock's original such a success, of which Anthony Perkins' portrayal of Norman Bates was a significant part.
Vince Vaughn stepped into the role of the deranged motel owner, but never quite filled the boots. He is edgy, twitchy and dark, and yet never manages to make us believe that there is a complex psychological drama playing out behind his eyes. Though Psycho was made during Vaughn's golden years, when he was best known for Swingers (1996) and was still taking smaller, more artistic roles, Bates was simply just not in his wheelhouse.
