11 Comic Book Characters Who Shouldn't Have Had A Movie (And The Alternatives Who Should)
9. Supergirl
Supergirl herself is a relatively popular character. Kara Zor-El, played by Helen Slater, is the cousin of Clark Kent and this movie was in canon with the Christopher Reeve Superman series of movies - but it is for that reason that this movie was a bad idea. The Superman franchise was already dwindling in 1984 when this film was made. The first Superman movie made $300 million at the box office, the second one made $108 million and the third just $70 million. It was after the third that this movie came to be and, with a smaller budget than any of the Superman films and a lesser known character as the titular heroine, it was never going to work. With a budget of $35 million, the movie pulled in only $14 million at the box office and is generally regarded by critics and the public alike as one of the worst comic book movies ever made. Alternative movie that should have been made: Wonder Woman. The Amazonian warrior is a far more popular character than Supergirl (being a part of DC's holy trinity of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman) and was fresh in the memory of audiences in 1984, following Lynda Carter's successful live action depiction of the character in the television series that finished just five years prior.
