11 Comic Book Characters Who Shouldn't Have Had A Movie (And The Alternatives Who Should)

7. Barb Wire

It is quite easy to see why Polygram thought this might have worked in 1996 - at least on a financial level - given that they signed 29 year old Pamela Anderson to star in it as the scantily clad bounty hunter from the Dark Horse comics. However, it was never going to be a critical success with an actress lacking in talent as much as Anderson and, given that it didn't even draw the crowds, despite Anderson's obvious assets, it was an all-round failure. Even factoring in the undoubted sex appeal of the combination of Pamela Anderson and Barb Wire, it was always going to be a risk. Barb Wire's audience is comparatively minimal, when you're comparing her to the more popular characters from the likes of DC and Marvel, and that ended up backfiring terribly. After spending $9 million on making the film, only $3.8 million was brought in at the box office. Alternative movie that should have been made: Babe. Another Dark Horse title (that was set in the same continuity as Hellboy, incidentally), Babe had a far more compelling premise whereby a gorgeous super-strong and super-durable redhead appears out of nowhere on a beach, naked. Kidnapped by aliens, she escapes and fights to discover her origins. As ridiculous as it sounds, it's a case of "if they produced a Barb Wire film and managed to make it so ridiculous, they might as well have gone all out".
