11 Confusing Moments That Prove All Movies Exist In An Alternate Reality

3. Unfamiliar Quotes - Stake Out/Jaws & Cop Out/Die Hard

Warner Bros. Pictures

In under-appreciated comedy Stakeout, starring Emilio Estevez and Richard Dreyfuss, the pair kill time on a stakeout, and play a game of Guess The Movie Quote. In a very thinly veiled tongue-in-cheek moment, Emilio Estevez's character offers the line: "This was not a boating accident!" Dreyfuss plays along straight faced - "I don't know" - despite the fact that the line is from Jaws, where it is delivered by Dreyfuss' character Matt Hooper.

The same joke occurs in awful Kevin Smith "comedy" Cop Out, in which Bruce Willis's character plays the same game, recognises a number of other quotes, but then fails to correctly guess "Yippie-ki-yay, motherf*cker!" Both examples are rare examples of the convention being more openly highlighted, though both suggest a dark alternate reality where John McClane and Hooper were played by someone other than the actors that made them iconic roles.
