Easily one of The Force Awakens' most successful new characters is Maz Kanata, the tangerine-looking, thousand-year-old alien who provides vital information to Rey mid-film. Sadly she gets only a few minutes of screen time but the stupendous effects combined with Lupita Nyong'o's superb performance ensure she leaves a lasting impression. It emerged shortly after release, however, that Kanata's role was trimmed down somewhat from what was originally planned: during the stormtrooper's assault on Kanata's castle, she used her force powers to collapse a ceiling and allow the heroes to escape, and it's expected that this will appear as a deleted scene on the movie's Blu-ray, as the visual effects were fully completed for it. As Kanata is confirmed to appear in Episode VIII, hopefully she'll be given a more action-orientated role and get to kick more stormtrooper a**, cementing her status as "the new Yoda".
