If theres any one element of Man Of Steel that left a bad taste with people it was the mega destructive ending, where Superman and Zod duke it out on the streets of Metropolis. They smash through buildings, shoot lasers at each other and generally terrify the crap out of people trapped in the middle of it. The major problem with this scene for most people - besides the overdose of CGI - is how Superman is causing as much destruction as his enemy; yes hes trying to stop Zods rampage, but watching him recklessly trash the city to do that results in tonal whiplash. There's also no real drama to the fight; its just two super-powered beings hitting each other endlessly while buildings collapse around them. Instead of being awe-inspiring the sequence is completely tone-deaf - with clumsy 9/11 imagery and a hero who's as much of a menace as the villain. If DC thinks this is what people want to see, then they really need to re-examine their approach.
