Going from Disney child star to legitimate adult actor is rarely a smooth transition, and Shia LaBeouf didn’t exactly make it easy. Despite a couple of career highlights like Disturbia and Lawless he’s become better known for on-set and off-set fighting, pretentious performance art projects and plagiarism antics than any roles of note.

But in David Ayers’ World War II set drama Fury, following an American tank crew in Nazi Germany during the final days of conflict, LaBeouf pulled out all the stops as scripture citing gunner Boyd ‘Bible’ Swan and proved there’s more to him than just a grown-up brat with a bad rep.

Digging deep into his inner method actor, LaBeouf reportedly went so far as not washing during filming to mimic the stink of being stuck in a tank for weeks on end, cutting his own face and even pulling out a perfectly healthy tooth. Whatever works for you, LaBeouf.
