Usually typecast as the chiselled white boy and limited to roles like the hot but not too bright boyfriend or action film fodder, it was assumed Channing Tatum had about as much acting clout as a plank of wood, but he showed he could do more than look pretty and pull in the female viewers when he starred opposite Jonah Hill in 21 Jump Street.

Adapted from the 80s TV show of the same name, the film features Tatum and Hill as undercover cops infiltrating a high school drug circle and showed Tatum could do funny with plenty of self-deprecating humour and knowing jabs (like him looking at least 15 years too old to be in high school).

He proved his worth as a comedic actor again in Magic Mike, partly inspired by his own experiences as a male stripper, and has shown he’s got dramatic acting chops too in films like biographical sports/crime drama Foxcatcher with Steve Carell and Mark Ruffalo.
