Maybe it was being a lead in the most hated tweeny bopper franchise of all time (that’s Twilight for the those who managed to avoid all the pre-pubescent hype) or perhaps it’s that she has a tendency to come across as po-faced and affectedly awkward in interviews. Either way, Kristen Stewart quickly became one of Hollywood’s most disliked young stars and was dogged by accusations that she couldn’t actually act.

While she was great in Greg Mottola’s nostalgic, coming-of-age comedy-drama Adventureland as angst-ridden college student Em Lewin, it was in Welcome to the Rileys playing self-destructive teenage stripper Mallory alongside the late, great James Gandolfini’s grieving parent Doug (mandatory ‘still a better love story than Twilight’ observation) that really established her as a worthy actress.

And since then in it’s only gotten better for Stewart with meatier roles in films like On the Roads, Clouds of Sils Maria and Still Alice beckoning all the more.
