11 HORRIFYING Films About Cults
4. Suspiria (2018)
The act of watching Suspiria can be quite challenging. The film cultivates a growing sense of dread and unease throughout its two-and-half-hour runtime, punctuated with scenes of intense violence and grotesque horror.
Suspiria (2018) is a remake of Dario Argento’s 1977 film. It was something of a passion project for director Luca Guadagnino, who acquired the rights to the film in 2008 and spent the next decade trying to get it made. The final result is an homage to the original - even the cinematography style is intended to recall '70s cinema.
The story revolves around Susie, who travels to Berlin to audition for the famed Markos Dance Academy. Unknown to Susie, the dance troupe is a front for a coven of witches, who worship god-like figures known as The Three Mothers.
Susie is gradually indoctrinated into the academy and becomes aware of a power struggle amongst some of the coven’s elder witches. Tensions are mounting, and some of the younger girls from the academy are going missing; Susie doesn’t know what all this means for herself, but she suspects it’s not good.
