Though it wasn’t exactly a favourite with critics after its 1988 release, William Lustig’s Maniac Cop – in which a crazed copper stalks the streets of New York City killing off civilians and co-workers before Bruce Campbell and his chiseled chin save the day – has since become the kind of schlocky cult classic best enjoyed with tongue firmly in cheek and enough beers to ensure you don’t think too deeply about it.

Z Nation director John Hyams will direct the remake with Lustig signed on to co-produce alongside Drive and Bronson director Nicolas Winding Refn, and though it would be great to see Bruce Campbell in some sort of role, considering he’s stated that the first Maniac Cop was ‘not a good movie’ he might not be too eager to return.

Whether the remake can re-capture the guilty pleasure of the original remains to be seen, but with all that’s going on in the USA at the moment with unwarranted police shootings, it’s a more than befitting time to release a film about force brutality.
