When it comes to originality and scare factor in the horror genre over the past couple of decades, it’s safe to say that East Asian cinema has cornered the market with some genuinely freaky offerings. Takashi Miike’s visceral vengeance movie Audition, disturbing Hong Kong horror Dumplings, and Korean vampire flick Thirst are just a few of the region’s worthiest offerings.

Perhaps predictably, Hollywood has tried to cash in on their success through English language remakes with varying levels of success. Whereas Gore Verbinski’s American take on Hideo Nakata’s Ring was suitably spooky, Brazilian director Walter Salles really should’ve left Nakata’s Dark Water well alone.

The latest East Asian horror to get a Hollywood makeover is director Kim Jee-woon’s critically acclaimed I Saw the Devil – a grisly Korean psychological horror focusing on a cat and mouse game between a serial killer and a National Intelligence Service agent – to be directed by Adam Wingard and his frequent collaborator, screenwriter Simon Barrett.

While Wingard and Barrett previously joined forces on the well-received slasher You’re Next, they’re also responsible for this year’s disappointing Blair Witch sequel. Hopefully they’ll pull it out the bag with their I Saw the Devil remake, but like any Western take on an acclaimed Asian horror there’s always the lingering question of if it ain’t broke, why try to fix it?
