11 Horror Sequels That Were Actually Better Than The Original
2. Bride Of Chucky
The original Child's Play might not be an all-time classic, but it is a very enjoyable horror flick that's easily one of the best horror films of the late 1980s (which was when horror started to decline).
After two weak sequels the franchise stalled, but following Scream's success, the franchise was revived with Bride of Chucky, a self-referential horror comedy in the vein of Scream. This was a risky move, but oh boy did it pay off.
Simply put, Bride of Chucky is a blast. It's sharply scripted, hysterically funny yet also suspenseful, snappily paced, filled with great performances and builds up to a highly satisfying conclusion. It's an excellently-constructed horror comedy and arguably among the best horror comedies ever made. Even the lead teen couple aren't annoying at all and are completely adorable.
Overall, with apologies to the original, this is definitely the best Child's Play film to date (star Brad Dourif has said it's his favorite in the franchise). One of the best horror films of the 1990s? You betcha.
The franchise's recent films have all been solid (save for Seed of Chucky) but it's hard to see Bride being topped anytime soon.
