After 1996's classic alien invasion blockbuster grossed an insane $800 million worldwide, expectations were high that Roland Emmerich's long-gestating sequel would take full advantage of the fast-growing global movie market to enormous box office glory.

As it turned out, Resurgence saw a rather modest return on its $165 million budget, allowing Logan to effortlessly swoop in and surpass the huge-scale sci-fi actioner.

A Wolverine movie outgrossing an Independence Day movie? A few years ago, when the prospect of an ID4 sequel didn't seem so bad and Wolverine's solo movies ranged from so-so to actually terrible, who would've seen that coming?
