11 Huge Screw-Ups From The 94th Oscar Film Nominations

7. Snub: Nicolas Cage For Best Actor

Don't Look Up

First up, Nicolas Cage deserved a nomination for Best Actor so badly for his genuinely amazing performance in Pig.

The film itself completely defies expectations. It sounded like a John-Wick style action film about Nicolas Cage going after the people who stole his pet pig, but in fact it's a quiet and thoroughly effective (if occasionally slow) drama almost entirely devoid of violence; Cage himself is similarly unpredictable.

He's known for his explosive acting roles but in Pig, Cage delivers a quiet, heart-rending turn as a hermit almost cut off from the world, and it's genuinely one of the most powerful, shattering performances you'll see this year, as well as a lovely reminder of what Cage is really capable of in the right role.

Therefore, he was easily a top-five nominee and while expecting such a nomination might seem like wishful thinking, Cage has got nominations in many other ceremonies and sometimes obscure performances can sneak their way to a nomination (such as Willem Dafoe in At Eternity's Gate), so it seemed like he might have a chance. In an ideal world, he would've replaced Javier Bardem in the Best Actor line-up.

Sadly, it wasn't to be.
