2. Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix

As with Star Wars, you wouldn't expect that a Harry Potter movie would be unprofitable. Order of the Phoenix was an expensive movie, costing about $150 million, but it grossed over $900 million at the box office. So it was a massive success, right?

At this point, you know where this is going.

In 2010, an accounting statement was leaked online that showed that the film had actually lost $167 million! You can check out the statement here.

It's bizarre how a nearly $1 billion movie could actually lose so much money, but thanks to various production expenses (including taxes), distribution fees, negative costs, and a nearly $60 million interest charge, the movie ended losing a lot of money for the studio.

Not even the boy who lived could survive the terrors of Hollywood accounting.
