11 Most Horribly Disappointing Movie Supervillain Reveals
2. The Mandarin (Iron Man 3)
Yes, we've all spent plenty of time whining about Shane Black's sleight of hand in Iron Man 3, but for many, it was almost as big as comic book movie disappointments come. The Mandarin being played by an Oscar winning actor? A trailer that suggests Tony Stark's most fierce match yet? And then...he turns out to be a joke character, a hilarious joke character at that, but still, it seems that in his quest to subvert expectations, Black forgot about having a reverence for the material you're adapting.
The short film All Hail the King did seek to rectify this by implying that a third Mandarin, the real one this time, is waiting in the wings to possibly appear in the future. Still, derailing a major comic book villain for the sake of cleverness seems like a misstep, though it did give Ben Kingsley one of his finest roles in years, so it's inevitably a double-edged sword.
