11 Most Horribly Disappointing Movie Supervillain Reveals

9. Khan (Star Trek Into Darkness)

One of the greatest mysteries of 2013 revolved around Benedict Cumberbatch's role in Star Trek Into Darkness. The smart money suggested that his character, going by the name of John Harrison, was actually Khan Noonien Singh, the villain played so memorably by Ricardo Montalban in the Original Series episode Space Seed, and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

This turned out to be correct, as half-way through the movie, when Harrison has been captured and is held in the Enterprise, he reveals his name (leaving out the Noonien Singh, naturally), to the bemusement of Star Trek fans everywhere. Did Cumberbatch give an excellent performance? Absolutely, but him playing Khan, who was originally played by a Mexican and looked starkly different in appearance (though was still far away from actually being Indian), is a bit of a tough sell. Why not create a new character, or at least have him play a character he more closely resembles?

Most of the main plot beats could have been the same, but without the weight and responsibility that depicting one of Kirk's most famous villains carries. Even J.J. Abrams himself admitted that keeping the villain's identity a secret for so long was a mistake, as it simply resulted in a lot of groans when the cat was finally let out of the bag. Was the villain good? Yes. Did it need to be wrapped in a plot twist? Absolutely not.
