1. Heath Ledger As The Joker

This article is now bookended by Jokers, as the late Heath Ledger€™s performance as Batman€™s insane arch-enemy was the most iconic comic book movie performance of the modern era. Indeed, it earned him a posthumous Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role - something unheard of in this genre.

Ledger got the best out of his performance by committing himself to the role unequivocally. It is said that he prepared himself for it by locking himself away in hotel rooms for weeks on end, looking in to a mirror and perfecting the character traits that he wished to convey to perfection.

The outcome of this dedication was a much darker and aesthetically very different Joker to anything we€™d seen before, and it worked brilliantly and it made the Dark Knight movie what it was.

His tragic, early death meant we€™d never get to see this Joker again - and that's a real shame.
