11 Real Star Wars Locations You Must Visit

4. Mount Etna (Italy)

While filming in Southern Italy the largest active volcano in Europe erupted. What are the chances?

The iconic lightsaber duel between Obi-Wan and Anakin was always supposed to take place on the volcano planet of Mustafar with movie lava being created using a food additive known as methodical.

But when Mount Etna blew its top in 2002 master cinematographer Ron Fricke was on-hand to capture actual lava flow which later made its way into Episode III. Cool.

Impromptu cameo aside, Etna isn't the only mountain to feature in Star Wars. In Episode III the peaked range on the Wookie home of Kashyyyk is actually the limestone karst mountains in Guilin, China and the mountains of Grindelwald in Switzerland were composited to become a little place called Alderaan.

A day trip to Mount Etna from Sicily can cost as little as £34 but a decade on it's still extremely volatile which makes it the most dangerous real-life location on this list.

Let's hope when you get to go when it's a little less explosive.
