Memories of Murder is a bit like Zodiac but with way more dropkicks, chronicling the real-life story of South Korea's most notorious, then-uncaught serial killer.

The toll of the rising body count and lack of any real suspects slowly creeps up on lead detective Park Doo-man as the years go by, with the events haunting him long after the murders dry up and the case gets shelved.

The epilogue picks up years later, with Park now having switched jobs out of the police force, driving by the scene where the first murder victim was found, and which put him on the case in the first place. He looks around, while a passerby mentions that he's the second person to visit the site today, suggesting that yet again, he's just missed the killer, this time by accident.

Overcome with the knowledge that he's never going to outrun this case, he looks directly into the camera and the film ends. With the killer uncaught at the time, director Bong Joon-ho has stated that this fourth-wall break was actually directed at the murderer himself, who could have been watching the movie at the same time as you.
