Oldboy is an unashamedly miserable film, about a man, Oh Dae-Su, who's imprisoned in a hotel room for fifteen years by a mysterious tormentor. Eventually he's set free, and can finally seek revenge for his murdered wife.

On his journey he becomes romantically involved with a younger woman called Mi-Do after meeting at a restaurant. The climax reveals this connection was all orchestrated in advance via hypnosis though, and that Mi-Do is actually Dae-Su's daughter, who he's been having sex with and has fallen in love with. Not great.

After taking out his tormenter and not revealing this information to Mi-Do, it's implied that Dae-Su then seeks out a hypnotist to erase these memories. The final shot is a close up of him embracing Mi-Do, with the film leaving it unclear whether or not he knows the truth, as his initially happy expression warps into one of anguish.
