11 Things You Learn Rewatching Moonraker
3. Jaws Gets Totally Ruined
What the filmmakers did to beloved villain Jaws (Richard Kiel) is nothing short of criminal in this movie. Director Lewis Gilbert apparently received so much fan-mail from kids asking why the razor-toothed villain couldn't be a hero that he decided to awkwardly transition the character into an ally of Bond.
Even before that happens, though, the sadistic edge of Jaws from The Spy Who Loved Me is diminished almost entirely here, turning the hulking baddie into a pratfalling comic relief character. Though Jaws continues to be entertainingly indestructible, he's placed in a number of embarrassing and humiliating scenarios that mostly undermine his physically imposing stature.
And then Jaws gets a girlfriend, Dolly (Blanche Ravalec), totally out of nowhere, who seemingly melts his heart and convinces him to turn on Drax. Oh, and he has a metal crotch now...because reasons.
Jaws was one of the easy highlights of The Spy Who Loved Me, but he's basically just goofy baggage in Moonraker. He was apparently set to marry Dolly in the next film, For Your Eyes Only, but the production ultimately tended towards a more grounded style and tone (thankfully).
