11 Times Movie Studios Stupidly Spoiled Their Own Secrets

9. David Prowse Spoiled That Darth Vader Is Luke's Dad...Two Years Before Empire's Release

The Secret: One of cinema's most iconic, often parodied and downright memorable plot twists, that Darth Vader (David Prowse/James Earl Jones) is in fact Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) father all along, revealed at the climax of the best Star Wars movie. How It Was Spoiled: David Prowse, who performed the physical aspects of Darth Vader, gave away the twist a whole two years before Empire came out. He blabbed to a fanzine, declaring, "In the next film, there is going to be a confrontation between Luke and Darth Vader and they then discover that Darth Vader never killed his father, that Darth Vader IS his father. So son can't kill father, and father can't kill son €” so Darth Vader lives into the next sequel." This quote was then picked up by more widely-circulating newspapers, and though thankfully it wasn't so disastrous in the pre-Internet age, it's still absolutely insane that Prowse would think it fine to spoil this twist. Why is it the studio's fault, then? Well, it's a damn good idea to have a tighter rein over talent than this: nowadays actors are coached about dealing with press and are generally given strict instructions regarding spoilers, as is obviously abundant with the currently tight-lipped cast of The Force Awakens. If someone, maybe even George Lucas, had just told Prowse to keep his mouth shut, or better yet, not unnecessarily told him the direction of the next movie so far ahead of time, then perhaps it could have been prevented.
