11 Times Movie Studios Stupidly Spoiled Their Own Secrets

8. Independence Day Action Figures Revealed What The Aliens Look Like

The Secret: Marketing for Roland Emmerich's mega-blockbuster was careful not to reveal what the aliens looked like, because of course, that's a huge part of the attraction with these movies. How It Was Spoiled: Though the trailers and posters didn't give anything away, the movie's toy line unfortunately ended up on shelves several weeks before the film came out, ensuring that anyone who wanted to know what they looked like, or anyone who innocently stumbled into the toy aisle, would end up having one of the film's big surprises ruined for them. Of course, in the end the aliens were relatively generic-looking and it wasn't that big of a deal, but given the effort Fox put into preserving the surprise, it's a shame they didn't manage to better communicate every aspect of the production and ensure the toys weren't available until the movie was out.
