11 Unnecessarily Flamboyant Scenes Wasted In Terrible Movies
4. The Bomb - Swordfish
The Scene: The very beginning of the movie features a devastating explosion which takes place in one lengthy, slow-motion shot. Firstly, we see the rigged hostage explode, taking two SWAT team guys with her, and as the camera pans in a circle, we see numerous more SWAT guys and cop cars be decimated by the exploding debris. The camera continues to pan through several buildings before emerging out the other side of the street. As we return to full speed, a car smashes to the floor and the camera cranes up, giving us a wide angle of the destruction. Why It's Unnecessary: For starters, for 2001, it's a ridiculously ambitious shot to pull off, and despite being 13 years old, it's actually aged incredibly well for the most part. It's just a shame that placing the money shot of the movie in the opening moments left audiences feeling pretty deflated for the remainder of the run-time. Despite a solid lead performance from Hugh Jackman and, well, a topless Halle Berry, Swordfish is a surprisingly boring movie for the most part, likely because a good portion of the budget was rinsed on this ludicrously needless (if technically jaw-dropping) shot. We love it, but we wish it were in a better movie, and we also wonder if without it Swordfish might've been a more sporadically interesting and entertaining film with more money to spend.
