8. Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk

Billy Lynn
TriStar

The Plot: 19-year-old soldier Billy Lynn (Joe Alwyn) is home from the Iraq war for a victory tour, but the public's jubilation is completely at odds with Lynn's grim experiences overseas, as well as a brutal revelation that awaits him.

Why You'll Cry: Ben Fountain's 2012 novel won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction among other awards and was lauded for its complex, emotionally shattering depiction of war's horrors, not only the combat and psychological effects themselves, but the attitude to soldiers once they return home.

Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, Life of Pi) is a master of emotionally resonant drama, and material like this is a perfect fit for him. Newcomer Alwyn is a bit of a wild card for sure, but with such a talented cast around him, not to mention Lee's strong casting instincts, it's hard to be skeptical about this one.

You're going to cry. A lot.
