5. A Crime Writer And A Female Detective (Castle)
The buddy cop formula is a mainstay of contemporary television, though due to the long-running nature of television shows in comparison to films, the partners both usually have to be police officers, as the mismatched pairings brought together in films to investigate one case wouldnt be suited to a procedural series where a different case is investigated each week. Because of this, most television police partnerships are believable and ordinary. The case of Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) is one of the few exceptions to this rule. Castle is a writer suffering from writers block after killing off his best-known character, but is brought in by the New York Police Department to consult on a copycat case based on one of his novels. Finding inspiration from this experience, he uses his friendship with the mayor to have himself assigned to Detective Beckett, wishing to use her as the model for a new literary character. Though she keeps him distant at first, Beckett eventually takes a liking to Castle, who proves be a resourceful asset. Their relationship gradually becomes more than professional, as is the case with almost every television show that brings a man and a woman together, but the strong chemistry between Fillion and Katic makes the show standout from its competitors in the somewhat stale procedural genre.
