10. Tom Cruise Is Really Playing Van Helsing – The Mummy
Universal are committing to the whole shared classic monster universe thing, and they're splashing big money around. Tom Cruise will lead the way with The Mummy, Johnny Depp will be The Invisible Man, Scarlett Johansson will meet The Creature From The Black Lagoon and Javier Bardem will play Frankenstein’s Monster.
Not a bad line-up, though The Mummy will have to be a sizable hit before the studio starts buying that second holiday home. From the looks of things, Cruise will play a soldier who encounters the titular Mummy and is somehow granted immortality along the way.
You might think if a star of Cruise’s calibre was joining this universe he might want to play an iconic role, and some detective work had him up for the Van Helsing reboot a couple of years ago. Many believe that’s still on the cards, and his character here will eventually be revealed as a descendant of the monster hunter, and he’ll get his own movie.
