12 Actors Who Got Drunk Or Stoned For Auditions
4. Damian Lewis - Band Of Brothers
If Damian Lewis could give you one piece of advice he learned from auditioning for the exceptional Band Of Brothers, it may well be not to celebrate too early. Following his first audition to play Major Dick Winters, which was well-received by producer Tom Hanks, Lewis celebrated with a night out in Los Angeles on which he got "absolutely hammered."
But then when he got back in, in the small hours of the morning, he found out that his audition had gone so well that they wanted to see him again. And the "they" in question was Steven Spielberg. At 9am that day.
"I go out and get absolutely hammered. I'm so excited. I'm in LA. I did a really good audition for Tom Hanks. I come back at 3 in the morning and I get a phone call at 8 o'clock. 'Damian, Steven [Spielberg] would like to meet you now, can you be here by nine?'"
Luckily, the alcohol didn't hinder him and his audition for Spielberg obviously matched Hanks' impression of him and he emerged with the role:
"I have three showers, 17 cups of coffee and I go in shaking. And Steven is there, and he's already got his video on his shoulder and then they offered me the role, there in the room. It was great. It was a great day."
