3. Mel Gibson - Mad Max

Impressively, Mel Gibson got into acting by accident.

No matter how good he is in roles like William Wallace or Martin Riggs or how talented he is behind the camera, the Lethal Weapon star only went along to the Mad Max audition that really launched him (it wasn't quite his first role) because his close friend Steve Bisley needed a lift.

And if it wasn't for a drunken bar brawl the night before (how out of character!), Gibson's involvement might have ended there. But thanks to the fight, he turned up with Bisley to the audition with a bruised and lumpy face, which somehow got him noticed above the rest of the crowd.

George Miller was suitably convinced he looked the part as exactly the kind of rough Mad Max needed and he was asked to return when he was healed for a proper read.
