2. Matthew McConaughey - Dazed And Confused

Matthew McConaughey's character in Richard Linklater's Dazed And Confused may be a bit of a problematic one these days, but the whole point of Wooderson was that he was supposed to be the coolest, edgiest guy in any room he was in.

And were it not for a transformative audition video, McConaughey would never have got the part, because Linklater took one look at him and decided he just wasn't right for the part. His mind was changed as soon as he saw the video, but it took some free booze for McConaughey to even get anywhere near an audition.

When he was a film student, McConaughey used to go to a Hyatt bar where he knew the bartender so he'd get free drinks. While there one night, he randomly got into conversation with a movie producer and the pair bonded so much that the guy realised he was perfect for Wooderson:

“Four hours later we got kicked out of that bar. On the way home he said ‘you ever acted? You might be right for this part. Come to this address and pick up the script tomorrow morning.’ And I did. There’s Wooderson on the page.”
